Train the Trainer Too!

The goal of the franchisor’s pre-opening training program should be to enable the franchisee not only to operate the business successfully, but also to train new staff members at the franchisee’s business location. With this in mind, the savvy franchisor will often develop a specific training program for each position in the franchisee’s organization. These mini-training manuals become the tool used by the franchisee in training his staff. With many small businesses having annual employee turnover rates of 100 percent or more, the execution of your brand standards at each franchise location will only be possible if your franchisees have the tools and knowledge to train their front-line employees on an ongoing basis.

Since these train-the-trainer manuals will be distributed to staff who have less invested in your franchise and are often less-qualified than your franchisee, be sure the material is written at a level they will readily comprehend. The best of these documents make ample use of photographs but do not contain the franchisor’s most proprietary, confidential information.

In developing these documents, it will also be important for the franchisor to teach the franchisee how to train their employees. Showing a franchisee how to conduct training is very different from training that franchisee on a particular topic.
